Internship insights: Lana Nguyen, JCU

Posted on 24/07/2011 by Cole Lawson in Interns

As a graduate with little experience I wasn’t confident enough before my internship to say that I could do the work at a graduate level...

However working in a professional environment has boosted my confidence. Even just the little things, such as creating a database for clients, gave me an insight into what day-to-day life in a public relations agency involves.

One of the highlights of my internship was developing social media sites for a client. It was a chance to put my creative flair into action and also spend time on Facebook and Twitter.

This made me realise how much a variety of work goes into a implementing a communication plan.

I had the chance to draft media releases and letters which was a chance to improve my writing skills and to get feedback so I can improve. I’ve also learnt that research is a key aspect of communications and the background work and attention-to-detail that needs to go into a PR campaign.

Another highlight was observing a client meeting - watching and listening to what the client wants from a PR firm and how the relationship is managed was enlightening. It made me realise that the PR consulting business is a two-way street. You need time and help from the clients as much as they need you!

I want to thank the Cole Lawson team for having me. The guys here really make you feel welcome and want you to learn as much as you can. My internship has been an amazing experience that I don’t think can be taught in a classroom and will definitely help me throughout my career.
